A generator repair engineer charged a customer $10,000 for a single tap of a hammer, and when challenged he wrote an itemized bill: "Tapping with a hammer: $1. Knowing where to tap: $9,999." The story, attributed to Charles Steinmetz and General Electric, is the classic illustration of value-based pricing: paying for results, not effort.
