Interesse: How "Interest" Grew Out of Compensation for Late Payment
The word "interest" that the whole modern financial world uses daily did not originate in the idea of a loan charge. It came from "interesse," a Roman law term for compensation for loss caused by late payment, which medieval merchants cleverly used to get around the Church's ban on usury.
