In 2019, Shell declared its ambition to become the world's largest electricity company by the 2030s, not by drilling more oil but by acquiring solar, EV charging, and distributed energy aggregation companies. Meanwhile, German utility giants E.ON and RWE were forced to split themselves in two because one-way centralized generation could no longer hold against the wave of decentralized renewables.
