Refill and Deposit-Return Packaging
In Germany, an empty plastic bottle has real value: a 25-cent deposit you only get back by feeding it into a return machine at the supermarket. The Pfand system has achieved bottle return rates above 98%, so high that many other countries treat it as a model to copy. But when consumer giant Procter & Gamble tried bringing a similar refill model to premium products through the Loop platform, the results were far less simple than Germany's numbers.
