How the King's War Debt Created the Bank of England
In 1694, a group of 40 merchants from London and Edinburgh did not found the Bank of England by accumulating business capital. They did it by lending the king money to fight a war, then trading that loan for a monopoly on issuing banknotes backed by the very same debt.
