Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs)

Before 1960, only wealthy individuals and institutions could invest in income-producing commercial real estate. Congress created REITs to "democratize" the asset class, so anyone who buys a few shares can own a slice of a portfolio of office towers, shopping centers or rental apartments.
