Herstatt Risk and the CLS Settlement System

On June 26, 1974, Germany's Herstatt Bank was shut down after taking in Deutsche Marks but before paying out the US dollars it owed, because the US payment system had not yet opened. The collapse gave its name to a distinct type of financial risk.
