In 1954, a Texas furniture store owner named Bob Meyer met a customer who lacked cash but had surplus industrial supplies. Instead of turning him away, Meyer accepted the supplies as credit against the purchase, then found another business needing exactly those supplies. That improvised step became the foundation of one of America's largest corporate barter industries.
